Network Of Marine Protected Areas Adopted!

On August 5th, 2009, the Fish and Game Commission voted to adopt a new network of marine protected areas (MPAs) spanning from the Pillar Point area to the Point Arena vicinity. This was a landmark decision to protect marine habitats and species for future generations made amidst concerns about the state's financial health and opposition to carrying out the state's plan to implement a statewide network of MPAs.

The Commission ultimately decided to adopt the IPA proposal (example maps and regulations of this alternative are contained in a past posting...more in-depth information can be found at www.dfg.ca.gov/mlpa), so we now have 21 new MPAs, including 10 fully protected no-take marine reserves in place, although it won't be official until January 1, 2010.
